Congratulations to Detroit Music Weekend's 2017 Juried Showcase Artist Winners! These artists were selected by a special showcase committee to pick the best of the best in Detroit talent. Artists spanning dance, theatre, music, and more will be located on two adjacent stages, and these are performances you don't want to miss.

Hardcore Detroit

Ford Showcase Stage @ 12:00pm

Hardcore Detroit was established in 2001, a product of the Detroit subculture cultivated through the experiences and vision of designer/dancer Haleem "Stringz" Rasul. They present urban dance to the Detroit community & abroad, performing a wide range of urban street forms such as b-boy, popping, locking, house dance, and the Detroit style dance known as The Jit.  

 

 

Ballet Detroit

Ballet Detroit is a development program for serious students of classical dance. Students are selected via audition and enter into year-long training program at the Detroit Opera House, under the direction of Sergey Rayevskiy.

 

PuppetART

Ford Showcase Stage @ 12:30pm

PuppetART has been delighting audiences in Downtown Detroit’s Entertainment District for 19 years, producing and performing puppet shows based on folktales from around the world. Their repertoire includes fan favorites like Snow Queen, Crane Maiden, Sleeping Beauty, and Oh, Ananse. In addition to their public performances, PuppetART also offers school field trip and workshops for participants of all ages.

 

Randal V Wilson & The ChoZen Few

Lear Showcase Stage @12:45pm

RANDAL “VELVET” WILSON & "The ChoZen Few" is a Detroit based, Progressive Jazz Quartet that features Original Music, and some cleverly arranged Jazz Standards. Randal was voted “Best Jazz Guitarist” by The Metro Times Readers Poll. This act has been labeled as “Far From Ordinary” and will indeed put a smile on your face.

 

King Moore

FORD Showcase Stage @ 1:00pm

KING THOMAS MOORE is a 10-year-old performance poet and founder of the 12 & Under Super Cool Poetry Open Mic that gives kids the opportunity to express themselves through poetry and oratory skills.

 

Mike Monford

Lear Showcase Stage @ 1:15pm

Native Detroiter Mike Monford got an early start on his love for music. Armed with his experiences as a performer, composer, and arranger, "Perseverance," Mike Monford's debut CD as a band leader was released in 2012. 

 

Detroit Children's Choir

Ford Showcase Stage @ 1:30pm

Detroit Children's Choir is comprised of over 300 Southeast Michigan children, ages 8-18, who have a passion and love for singing. They receive training in music literacy, sight reading and vocal technique and perform works ranging from American heritage, classic children’s choral works, and texts in foreign languages.

 

Jade Reynolds

Lear Showcase Stage @ 1:45pm

Jade Reynolds has been making music since she could reach the keys on the piano. She loves to write music, began composing her own songs when she was thirteen, and is currently working on an album of all original material. Jade will be pursuing a degree in the arts at Grand Valley State University in the fall.

 

Jennifer Harge

Jennifer Harge is a performer, art maker, and educator, currently holding lecturer appointments at Oakland University and the University of Michigan. Trained as a modern dancer, Harge’s work lies at the intersection of movement, performance art, African American culture, and choreographies of protest. Her creative work has been made for both site specific and proscenium stage performances and she holds an MFA from University of Iowa as a Dean’s Graduate Fellow and a BFA from University of Michigan.

 

Argentine Tango Detroit

Argentine Tango/United States Tango Champions- Daniel y Amanda both come from dancing families, and have joined to form a dynamic dream team. Together they are the essence of tango: romance, connection, and passion.

 

Sumkali

Ford Showcase Stage @ 2:45pm

SUMKALI Blending Indian classical music with jazz, funk and folk music, Sumkali has found a way to do world fusion that works. For more than a decade, Sumkali has brought their unique blend of music to a wide array of audiences across the U.S. Drawing on influences from India to Mowtown, Sumkali is working on their 4th album and have been nominated for multiple Detroit Music Awards.

 

Detroit Windsor Dance

Detroit Windsor Dance Academy is located in Detroit’s New Center One and is celebrating 33 seasons of dance. Founded by Executive Director Bruce Hunt and Artistic Director Debra White-Hunt BA, M.Ed, this premier Detroit gem has performed around the world and taught over 15,000 students, many who are dancing professionally throughout the world.

 

Sphinx

Ford Showcase Stage @ 3:15pm

Sphinx Organization is the Detroit-based national organization dedicated to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts. Founded at the University of Michigan in 2016, the Ivalas Quartet is comprised of violinists Anita Dumar and Reuben Kebede, violist Caleb Georges, and cellist Pedro Sánchez. The quartet is deeply committed to sharing impassioned performances of repertoire both new and old as well as advocating for diversity in classical music.

 

Torch with a Twist

"Torch With Twist" is Detroit's quintessential Olde-Timey Vaudevillian Variety Extravaganza.  They combine Classic Jazz Standards with a variety of Circus & Sideshow acts & depending on circumstances & availability we produce the show to suit each gig & particular venue.

 

Dan Tillery

DAN TILLERY has a personal mantra of ‘live, laugh, love, and rhyme’. A radiant and unpredictable character, fans never know what to expect when he jumps onstage and his newest EP release, ‘We Like To Have Fun!’, exemplifies this musical spontaneity.

 

Joel Fluent Greene

Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit is one of Southeast Michigan’s most highly regarded cultural treasures. Founded by Rick Sperling in 1992 to address gaps in Metro Detroit arts education, Mosaic served 25 young artists in its inaugural year. Today, hundreds of youth from more than 50 Metro Detroit schools participate in Mosaic’s First, Second and Main Stage programs every year.
